This year, the number of participating beers went up to 1,113, an increase of 16% over 2010. Though the organisers - Private Brauereien - were pleased about this development, they were also confronted with a mounting challenge with respect to logistics.
For the first time, even the much larger tasting team was unable to evaluate all beers in one day. The jury that chose the world's best beers in all 49 beer categories consisted of almost 100 brewmasters, beer sommeliers and specialized journalists from 26 countries.
The gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded on 10th November at Brau Beviale in Nuremberg, Germany to beers from a total of 20 countries.
All the awarded breweries are listed in the List of winners 2011 (see below).
The public prizes Consumers' Favourites were chosen from the ranks of the European Beer Star gold medal winners. Visitors at the Brau Beviale in Nuremberg chose their favourite beers at a blind tasting session.
