The tasting took place at the beginning of October at the Doemens Academy in Gräfelfing. The safety of the experts and helpers had top priority. Best possible protection thanks to a sophisticated hygiene concept: each of the ten teams had its own room, which was regularly ventilated, and the group size was limited to eight people. The organizer of the European Beer Star, the Association Private Brauereien, together with the Doemens Academy, set a minimum distance of two meters. Masks were mandatory, except of course, at the tasting table.
The range of varieties in European beer styles was represented in 70 different categories. An international expert jury evaluated the beers submitted during a 2,5-day blind tasting.
The key test criterion here is the sensory experience. However, in addition to beer quality, meeting the requirements of the category description is key. The European Beer Star is solely concerned with special, authentic beers. The three best beers in each category are awarded a gold, silver and bronze medal.
